Biography

Dr Fakhro is Director of the Human Genetics Department at Sidra Medical Research Center in Doha, Qatar. He obtained his Bachelor’s degree with Honors in Cell Biology and Molecular Genetics from the University of Chicago and his Ph.D. in Human Genetics from Yale University, where he was part of a highly selective Howard Hughes Medical Scholars program, studying the molecular underpinnings of human disease “from bench-to-bedside.” Dr Fakhro’s work leverages high-throughput technologies to study human health and disease, with particular emphasis on integrative large-scale population ‘omics analysis. In Qatar, his research programs include launching a national Mendelian disease program, building new Qatari reference genomes, and creating translational tools to build Precision Medicine capacity in the region. Dr Fakhro also catalyzed critical collaborations around the use of genomics to study the Qatari population, engaging local stakeholders from science, academia and government to build multidisciplinary teams around genomic projects. His work has been recognized through high-profile publications, >$5m in grant funding, and through media as a regional Genetic Medicine expert. Dr Fakhro has also served as a Consultant to the recently launched Qatar Genome Program. Academically, Dr Fakhro holds appointments as Assistant Professor at both Weill Cornell Medical College and Hamad Bin Khalifa University, where he teaches, supervises PhD candidates, and serves as a domain-expert for establishing Islamic ethic guidelines for genomics.
